Swope Loan

The H. Gladys Swope Loan Program offers students assistance in the costs of education while attending college. It is sponsored by the Student Center Foundation.

Who can qualify for the H. Gladys Swope Loan?

Wisconsin residents who are also active students of Christian Scientist qualify while attending any public or private university or technical college located in the United States, provided that the student was a Wisconsin resident immediately prior to attending. Eligible applicants can apply for Swope Loans prior to, or at any time throughout, their studies.

How is Wisconsin residency determined?

Residency eligibility is generally based on the student or a parent living within the state for a minimum of the last 12 months. Some exceptions are available for military service or other situations. These exceptions are similar to those utilized in establishing residency tuition for University Wisconsin system students described on the  UW residence page.

Can I apply as a graduate student?

Yes. Both undergraduate and graduate student loans are available.

How much funding can I receive?

You may apply for a loan up to $7,000 per year, with a maximum of $30,000 outstanding.

What are the interest rates?

Interest rates are one-half the federal student loan rate. Undergraduate loans are presently at an interest rate of 1.375%, while graduate loans are issued at 2.15%.

When does interest start accruing on a loan?

Interest on loans starts to accrue 12 months after a student leaves school.

When do I need to start paying off my loan?

Payments start 12 months after graduation, or upon leaving school without graduating. The loan must be paid off within 6 years.

How do I apply?

Students interested in applying for a loan should download the application, complete it and mail it to the Student Center Foundation. Alternatively, you can submit our online application form in place of the paper application.
